Runoff from farms and cities carries nitrogen and phosphorus into the water, triggering a process called eutrophication—the rapid aging and decline of a water body. Over time, layers of decomposing material settle at the bottom, forming “muck” that consumes oxygen and creates dead zones. These conditions damage aquatic life, reduce biodiversity, and make lakes less healthy, less beautiful, and less usable for communities.
